The state government of Punjab is leading their way towards increasing the standards of the state. They are taking effective measures to help out the poor and financial weak people in various ways. The state government of Punjab is also focusing on the girl education in the state, side by side. As comparing these two statements, the Punjab government has launched a scheme which is called as ‘Mai Bhago Cycle Vidya Scheme’. Officially the scheme was launched by Mr. Prakash Singh Badal in the year 2011. The main purpose of bringing up this scheme was to improve the scenario of the girl education in Punjab state.

Mai Bhago was a Sikh woman who fought against the Mughals in 1705 and led the Sikh soldiers against the Mughals. On her name this scheme was finalized to launched. Under this scheme, the Punjab government will provide cycles to all the girls studying in government schools of Punjab. The cycles will be issued only to those girls who are studying in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th standard. In a recent survey by Punjab government, they observed that there are many girls who cover a large distance to go to their school. As their homes are too much far away from their respective school. So keeping this thing in mind, the government decided to distribute the bicycles to all the girls of government schools from 9th to 12th standard classes.

The bicycles will be given for free to all the girl students, as this will be a great help for all the girls who travel a long distance from their home to their school. Moreover this will be a major help to the students who are financial not so strong and have to cover a far distance for their school. But this year there was a slight change in the plan, as the government decided to distribute the cycles only to the girl students of 11th and 12th class only. The students of 9th and 10th class will not be included in this scheme from now on wards. The state government lacks in budget so they will not distribute the cycles among the 9th and 10th class students.

As per the latest newspaper report it was stated that the Punjab government issued a letter to the Director General School Education (DGSE), Punjab to make out a list of all the girls students studying in the government schools of Punjab in 11th and 12th standard. DGSE prepared a list of all the girls students of 11th and 12th class and sent it to the Punjab government. Whereas the girls studying in 9th and 10th class were left out, as DGSE said that he was not given any type of instruction to prepare the list of 9th and 10th class girls. Due to the financial issues of the state these girls were left out.

Not only this by now the complete number of bicycles are not even issued to the girls of 11th and 12th standard. As per the estimates only 70 cycles were issued in the Kapurthala district of Punjab but the exact number of girls student in that district is 3700. Moreover in Jalandhar there are about 11,700 girl students and only 5000 bicycles are issued in this district. The remaining girls are yet to receive the bicycles. As per the promise of the Punjab government, the remaining girls will soon be provided with the bicycles.
