There are 603 new Gram Panchayats in the state of Odisha where the elections will be held this year. The Gram Panchayat is the grass root of administration and is influenced by the political party in governance and functions to bring about empowerment and betterment of its specific village. A population of 10,000 members comes under a single gram panchayat. 415 of the new gram panchayats created from the districts of Bargarh, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Balasore, and Kalahandi will be eligible to elect panchayat members in the 2017 panchayat elections. This will bring the total of the Odisha state to 6211 gram panchayats, being one of the highest in the nation. The information on the coming Panchayat Elections was released by the SEC secretary Rabindranath Sahu when he spoke to the media about this development. He emphasized that this is a huge step towards urbanization by the state and has been come into action after the division in five districts where groups of 10,000 people were segregated into a panchayat. 603 new Gram Panchayats were formed as a result and 415 of these will be contesting for various posts this year.

On the part of the various candidates, the national and state level parties will be contesting these panchayat elections by sending their best contenders from each panchayat. The interested candidates can also contest independently by registering on time with the Election Department. Once the nominations are filed the people of Odisha will be able to check the contestants from their gram panchayat by referring to the website and also be able to check the voter’s list. The contesting contenders will be going from home to home and using various media methods to spread their propaganda for the election to each voter in their contingency.
