The Railway was formally inaugurated on 16th April, 1853 amidst a huge applauding crowd and carrying 400 guests. About 11,000 trains run under the Indian Railways each day, coursing across the nation and bridging gaps between regions. 7000 of these trains are passenger trains and are a daily means of affordable transport for a huge chunk of the population.
